Lightweight plywood and hoop pine plywood for use in various interior and exterior applications

Plywood is an engineered wood that is made by gluing thin sheets of veneers, also called plies. Sheets are glued at right angles in alternating ways to form a cross-grain pattern that adds strength and stability to the material. This arrangement also helps in minimising shrinkage, and warping of the material when it is exposed to humidity and variations in temperature. The number of plies used determines the thickness of the board. The plies are added in odd numbers of 3, 5, or 7 for dimensional stability. Grades of lightweight plywood define the quality and appearance of the board, with an A bond signifying the best quality, and a D bond the lowest.

The standard size of lightweight plywood is 4’ x 8’ or 3’ x 7’, with thickness ranging from 1/8 inches to 1 and ¼ inches. Lightweight plywood of the best quality is available as pre-laminated and pre-veneered boards at Matilda Veneer, that have a high strength and durability.

Different types of lightweight plywood can be used for different applications. These are:

Commercial Plywood: The lightweight plywood is best suited for use in wardrobes and cabinets, and also in living rooms. It is more resistant to warping compared to MDF.

Softwood and Hardwood: Lightweight plywood made from softwood is cheaper than hardwood, and is obtained from non-deciduous trees like hoop pine and cedar. On the other hand, hardwood boards are stronger and more durable than softwood boards made from hoop pine plywood and other softwood.

Marine Plywood: This lightweight plywood is waterproof, and can be used for exterior applications. It does not get damaged when exposed to water and wet conditions for a long time, or even when immersed in water.

Fire retardant plywood: The lightweight plywood has low flammability and is specially treated to prevent the spread of fire for two or more hours. This way, fire retardant plywood can withstand fire for long enough to allow people to safely evacuate the premises.

Fireply X fire-rated plywood by Matilda Veneer is a versatile, pre-finished, and ready-to-install lightweight plywood, which is compliant with increasingly rigorous relevant Australian standards relating to fire safety. With a focus on solving major design and compliance challenges, Fireply X is available in a range of perorated options at Matilda Veneer, and eight trendy colours. The product is certified as Fire Hazard Group 2, making it compliant for use in almost all areas of class 2-9 buildings by the Building Code of Australia (BCA). The Group 2 certified perforated options add a much-needed solution for projects where acoustics, aesthetics, and fire safety compliance are non-negotiable.

Matilda Fireply is another lightweight plywood by Matilda Veneer which is fire-resistant, and ideal for interior cladding use in commercial and residential buildings. Most fire-retardant Australian plywood is treated post-production, limiting its fire resistance. On the other hand, Matilda Fireply lightweight plywood is treated with veneer impregnation method before plywood production, making the whole product fire retardant, not just the exterior. The lightweight plywood is easy-to-machine, and designed for use in commercial interiors and other applications where improved resistance to fire is required.

Versatility of hoop pine plywood

Hoop pine plywood is one of the most widely used plywood in various commercial and residential applications. This Queensland timber is widely used in flooring, joineries, shelving, cupboards, and furniture. Hoop pine plywood available at Matilda Veneer is treated with preservatives, making it suitable for use in exterior applications, like landscaping, pergolas, fencing, and retaining walls. Its heartwood ranges from pale cream to light yellow-brown. It’s very fine and evenly textured wood with a straight grain. The plywood can also be used for a variety of non-architectural and non-building applications such as drafting instruments and musical instruments.

The sapwood used in hoop pine plywood is easily treatable with preservatives, but the heartwood is not. It is resistant to lyctid borer attack and has a life expectancy of less than seven years above the ground, and five years below. The product can be polished, painted, and stained with ease, and works well with fittings and fastenings. A/A Grade hoop pine plywood is ideal for use in kitchen & bathroom cabinetry, A/A grade is suited for use in internal walls and ceiling lining, while B/B grade can be used in furniture and bathroom cabinetry.
